Chapter 6
âWhy does every mission end with me recuperating in someoneâs bed?â
âNot any someoneâs. Yours and Cerdicâs, and this is only the second time that I know of. I suppose it happens because you seem to put yourself in danger,â Leofric replied, amusement tingeing his words.
Tony slit his eyes open and rolled onto his side, looking at him in dismay. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWatching over you while the others clean up the mess we left behind.â
Dazed by the mageâs presence, and not yet fully recuperated from what had happened to him, Tony rubbed his hand over his face, trying to understand. âButâ¦How did we get here?â
âWulf and Daniel were kind enough to teleport us back before returning to Jandarâs hideout. My brother did not want you to awaken alone and ordered me to keep you company.â
âOh.â Tony tried to process what Leofric was saying. âWhy you, not him?â
âHe felt it would be best if I was not there after seeing him slay Jandar.â
He let Leofricâs words sink in. âYou did love him, despite what you told me,â he said softly.
âTo my everlasting shame, I did. I never said otherwise. Even afterâ¦after everything that happened between us.â Leofric smiled sadly. âI was young, well, young for one of us. I was dealing with my growing powers and he was there to help, or so I thought. Never trust it when a mage offers you something without your asking. It can be very destructive. At least between mages it can. I fell deeply in love with him and he encouraged it until it was too late. When he told me why he had done so, I could not believe he could be that duplicitous.â
âIâm sorry. Not that means much I know, but I am. No one deserves what he did to you.â
Leofric gave a small shrug. âI am not the first to have my heart broken and I will not be the last. I survived. I learned from it and vowed it would never again happen to me.â
âSomeday you might meet someone who will make you break your vow.â
âDoubtful, my romantic young friend.â
Tony heard footsteps racing up the stairs to the royal wing, the door slammed open, and bare seconds later Cerdic was in the bedchamber and at the bed, gathering Tony into his arms.
âYou are alive. I was so afraid we had come too late.â
âA bit worse for wear, still, but well on my way to healing,â Tony replied. He didnât get a chance to say more as Cerdic was kissing him, pouring all his love and relief into it. When it ended, Tony eased out of his husbandâs embrace because heâd told the truth when he said he wasnât fully healed, yet.
Cerdic quickly understood, taking Tonyâs hands in his instead. He surveyed what remained of the deep wounds the dagger had inflicted, hissing in an angry breath. âIf I could do it again, that bastard would have died slowly and painfully.â
âNo. That is not you, my love. You donât have it in you to make anyone suffer, no matter what theyâve done.
